Fall is my favorite time of year to daydream about hitting the road. The air gets crisp, the walks get crunchy, and suddenly I’m ready to romanticize my life like I’m in a travel montage. There’s something about this season that makes me feel like I wandered into a book where the pages smell like coffee and a dive into a leaf pile.
Inspired by my fall fantasies, I’m sharing three of my dream trips that hit totally different moods: the mountain adventure of Franconia Notch, the cozy creativity of Asheville, and the golden magic of Taos. Pack a sweater and a sense of direction (or a reliable GPS). Let’s go!

Franconia Notch, New Hampshire: The Adventure Novel
Franconia Notch isn’t for sipping cider in a rocking chair (though no judgment if you do that later). It’s for lacing up your boots, inhaling the crispest air on the planet, and realizing nature’s color palette might actually have too many settings.

Why It’s Dreamy
It’s the kind of trip where you return home and your laundry smells like pine and accomplishment. The mountains do all the work; you just have to show up and remember your water bottle.
What to Do in 3 Days
- Hike the Flume Gorge and pretend you’re on a National Geographic special.
- Catch golden-hour views from Artists Bluff. Yes, the name sounds dramatic. Yes, it earns it.
- Drive the Kancamagus Highway, possibly the most photogenic stretch of pavement in America.
- Reward yourself with pie in Littleton, because adventure calories don’t count.
If You Can’t Go Now: Read a Book
If you can’t hike through the White Mountains, reading about someone hiking the Pacific Crest Trail while confronting life’s chaos is the next best thing. It’ll make you want to buy trail mix and pretend your local park is a mountain pass.
Asheville & the Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina: The Cozy Bestseller
If Franconia Notch is the rugged outdoor epic, Asheville is the book you curl up with in an oversized sweater while pretending you’re editing your novel. Cardigan Mode: ON.

Why It’s Dreamy
Asheville is equal parts mountain town and creative hub. You’ll spend half your time trying to act like you belong in a gallery, the other half wondering how you got talked into a craft workshop, and somehow it all adds up to a perfectly reasonable excuse to ignore your responsibilities for a couple of days.
What to Do in 3 Days
- Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway and stop at every overlook that makes you audibly gasp.
- Hike Linville Falls or Craggy Gardens if you want to feel noble before brunch.
- Browse Asheville’s River Arts District and buy something wildly impractical but charming.
- End the day with a cider flight and live bluegrass you didn’t know you needed.
If You Can’t Go Now: Read a Book
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
It’s moody It’s moody, atmospheric, and full of swampy Southern solitude. But don’t worry, it pairs just as well with a cup of Appalachian cider as it does with Carolina humidity. Ideal for curling up under a blanket while convincing yourself that reading outside counts as “getting fresh air.”
(Optional alternative if you want something lighter: The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Same Southern warmth, less murder.)
Taos, New Mexico: The Magical Realism Novel
Taos is what happens when fall gets tired of leaves and decides to try golden aspens, adobe walls, and art festivals instead. It’s cultural, colorful, and about as photogenic as a travel guide cover.

Why It’s Dreamy
Taos proves that fall doesn’t have to mean flannel. It can mean turquoise skies, hot air balloons, and galleries full of color that make your phone storage panic.
What to Do in 3 Days
- Explore Taos Pueblo and feel tiny in the best way.
- Drive the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway and watch the desert turn to gold.
- Visit during Taos Fall Arts Festival for local art, music, and general creative chaos.
- Or time it with the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally in late October. Picture sunrise over mountains filled with balloons and the faint smell of roasted chiles.
If You Can’t Go Now: Read a Book
The Milagro Beanfield War by John Nichols
Set in a small New Mexico town, this one’s full of quirky characters, local politics, and that blend of humor, heart, and everyday magic that feels exactly like Taos in autumn. Reading it feels like sitting in a sun-warmed adobe courtyard listening to gossip over green chile stew.
Final Thoughts
Three days may not sound like much, but that’s the secret. You can squeeze a surprising amount of wonder into a long weekend if you stop overthinking it.
- Want peak foliage and mountain heroics? Go Franconia Notch.
- Want cozy food, art, and cardigan energy? Go Asheville.
- Want golden light and culture overload? Go Taos.
You’ll be home by Monday with a coffee mug souvenir and enough photos to fool everyone into thinking you’ve been gone a week.
