Kansas City has been on my weekend getaway radar for a while, and it delivered. In just two days, we managed to squeeze in tacos, cocktails, live music, some quality thrift digging, and more than one road trip dance party. It was the kind of visit that didn’t feel rushed but still made the most of every hour, which is pretty much the sweet spot for any mini getaway.

The Road to KC
Kansas City is just a few hours from my hometown of St. Louis, which makes it a perfect mini escape, especially when you’re craving something different but not too different.
We hit the road with the essentials: a full tank of gas, a playlist that swung from hip hop to dramatic show tunes, and a snack lineup with enough variety to open a modest concession stand at a rest stop. What can I say? A road tripper’s gotta have snack options.
By the time we rolled into the city, we were well-fed, a little hoarse from car karaoke, and ready to settle in. We found our hotel, the AC Hotel Kansas City Plaza, and got ourselves checked in.

The room was spacious, stylish, and totally functional, nothing wild, but I snapped a pic anyway because…documentation. Now, what was wild was that one of the only two elevators had been out of service for quite some time (and yes, there’s a sign that someone has cheekily altered to let you know it’s not a temporary thing). If you like suspense, nothing beats waiting to see if you’ll actually catch the elevator before it fills with people again. Thrilling.

Pro tip. If you’re staying there during a weekend, know that the surrounding streets are blocked off for pedestrian traffic, which sounds charming until you’re looping the same five blocks at midnight just trying to get back to your room.
But I’ll give credit where it’s due. The staff was warm and helpful, and the room itself was clean and quiet. We slept well. We just didn’t get to our room quickly.
Taco Energy + Westport Wandering
Once we dropped our bags, it was time to explore the neighborhood a bit. Our first food stop? Pinches Tacos, a bright, funky spot with an adorable selfie wall and tacos that absolutely hit…as long as you don’t forget to ask them to remove that devil cilantro weed like I did (trying to remove chopped herbs from your tacos is kind of difficult). The margaritas were fun and refreshing. This place is exactly the kind of vibe I crave on a quick trip. Fast, fun, and flavorful.

We walked off our tacos by checking out a few local shops (just a light browse as we were pacing ourselves) and eventually landed at Char Bar – Westport for another drink. This place is a backyard party disguised as a bar. There’s a big patio, lawn games like giant Jenga and Connect Four, and a cocktail menu that’ll keep you seated longer than you planned.

Beats, Strings, and a Lot of Soul
After heading back to the hotel to regroup and get all gussied up, we made our way to Music Theater Heritage for a show: Beats + Strings: The Soul Renaissance.
Picture this. Your favorite R&B hits reimagined with live strings, layered with electronic percussion, all inside a nightclub-style setup. There were solos on violin, cello, flute, and keyboard, each one a crowd-pleaser, and the musicians kept the energy high the entire time. At a few points, a dancer joined in to add even more flavor to the performance.
The performers (cellist Robert McNichols, Jr., violinist K’Tina, DJ D Dot Professor, flautist Amber Underwood, and dancer Demarco Williams) encouraged the audience to vibe with them, came out into the crowd to serenade and dance with audience members, and generally made the performance feel like a big party. I love when artists seem to be having a great time. It makes a show feel inclusive, like they’re letting you hang out during a well-cultivated jam session.
Check out the Instagram reel for clips of the show and to learn more about the performers!
Late-Night Bites + Slow Mornings
After the show, we were starving, so we hit up Lulu’s Thai Noodle Shop and split an appetizer sampler. The food was satisfying and conquered the late-night craving, so much so that I forgot to take pics. Oops!
The next morning was gloriously slow, the kind of ease you only get when you have nothing on the calendar except breakfast and treasure hunting. We skipped the hotel breakfast (it was very picked over) and treated ourselves to The Big Biscuit nearby, where I got a veggie scramble, fresh fruit, and the titular biscuit. I went in expecting standard-issue chain fare, but that biscuit? Buttery, flaky, surprisingly excellent. Zero complaints.

The Thrift Tour + Giant Retro Wonderland
My travel buddy had thrift shopping on her Travel Top 5 (a key part of The Mini Getaway Guide philosophy…more on that here), so we hit up City Thrift Waldo and Goodwill Waldo. Both had plenty to explore such as quirky books, retro dishes, a denim section that felt like it could swallow me whole. The treasure hunt was on.

On the way home, we made one last stop at Midway Antique Mall in Columbia, Missouri. I cannot overstate how massive this place is. It’s like an antiques labyrinth. The photos didn’t even begin to capture the scale (I tried, but my camera skills peaked at “accidentally artsy”).

Final Thoughts
Kansas City knows how to show you a good time. From the taco-and-margarita high at Pinches to the string-infused R&B groove at Beats + Strings, this trip packed a lot of personality into just two days.
What stood out most? The energy. Every spot we visited had its own charm. Even the antique mall on the drive home felt like a little surprise detour from time itself.
Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. Maybe next time I’ll even find a hotel with working elevators. But let’s not get greedy.
If you’ve spent time in Kansas City, I’d love to hear your favorite spots…restaurants, shops, hidden gems, anything! Drop them in the comments so I can add them to my list for the next getaway.
